Where To Eat When In Memphis: 2 Not-to-be-missed Restaurants

We have a tradition of taking a trip over the Thanksgiving holiday.  This year we chose Memphis and Little Rock as our destination of choice.

Before we left home, I did my typical research for restaurant reviews.  Since we were traveling over a holiday, I called ahead to inquire about the prices, reservations, etc.  I called The Cupboard Restaurant and the kind woman that answered the phone confirmed that they would be open Thanksgiving Day and that they had a meat and three veggie plate for $11.51.  I asked if that was the price for Thanksgiving and she said yes.  I remarked that I expected it to be more since it was Thanksgiving and she said if it was good enough to charge in May then it was good enough to charge in November.  I knew we had to visit.

We arrived and Memphis from Dallas and went straight to the restaurant.  There was a line out the door but everyone coming out was saying it was definitely worth the wait.  They also had someone come out with some warm cornbread muffins to whet our appetite and they were yummy.

The Cupboard

The Cupboard restaurant has been a Memphis tradition for 70+ years.  It has a down home diner feel where you would expect all the locals to hang out.  It is a Memphis’ favorite casual home-cooking eatery. They will not accept reservations, but are always popular, so keep that in mind when planning your day.

I ordered the turkey, stuffing, cucumber and tomato salad, cranberry sauce and macaroni and cheese.  I skipped dessert as we were planning on eating again later but it was all delicious and the wait staff was very friendly.

If you enjoy down-home cooking and are okay with a no-frills atmosphere then you will love the great food and great prices at The Cupboard.  I would definitely try this again on my next visit to Memphis.  Find out more by visiting their website, The Cupboard Restaurant

The second place we tried on our weekend stay was Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken.  We did have two recommendations to go there and one person said, don’t go there if you don’t want to get fat so I’m assuming it must be good.

But y’all I have a confession. I am not a fan of fried chicken.  GASP!!

I know, I know…

I live in the south so it should just be like a regular staple of my diet, right? I mean in general I do like it but it’s not necessarily my favorite.

But that may have changed….I need to tell you about my recent experience at Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken. It was A◦M◦A◦Z◦I◦N◦G and you should run (not walk) to Memphis and get you a bite! Their hot and spicy chicken was just the right amount of heat without being overpowering. In fact, it was so good that our daughter and son-in-law went back later that night for MORE chicken and sweet tea!

IMG_3032

Gus’s offers spicy, crispy chicken fried to order in peanut oil.  Served on simple Styrofoam plates with beans, slaw and bread it’s been around since the 1950’s.  It has a “hole in the wall but you know it’s going to be good” vibe about it and it did not disappoint.  I ordered my meal with an extra side of mac and cheese and it was all very good.  We also ordered pecan pie for dessert and they warm it up and serve it with ice cream and it really was delicious.

They do have a location in Ft. Worth that we’ll be trying soon but we definitely recommend trying it out if you are in Memphis.  You can check out their website, Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken.

Have you visited either of these restaurants?

5 Tips For An Awesome Morning

I think one of the key elements of a successful day is getting it started off right with an awesome morning.  Here are my top 5 tops to create that type of morning for yourself!

TIP #5 – Get up 15 minutes earlier
This might be the most difficult part of creating an awesome morning routine but it’s an important one.  Those that know me know that I love lounging in my bed and just relaxing in general but getting up 15 minutes earlier has helped me get a jumpstart on my day.  It’s a small enough time frame that your whole schedule won’t be out of whack but a large enough amount of time to get some things done without rushing.

TIP #4 – Put your phone down
Once you are up…put your phone down.  It’s not productive for you to fall into the “I’m just going to check Facebook real quick….” trap.  Before you know it you are 30 minutes into a discussion about something that will not help you have a better day.

tZaKyGvOTJuOyMt2LOtMBA

Same thing goes with emails, don’t check those when you first get up.  Whatever is in those emails (or on Instagram or Pinterest) can wait.  If it was an emergency they’d call.  They wouldn’t wait for you to check your email.

TIP #3 – Stretch
This tip is something new that I’ve added to my morning routine this year.  Once I get up I just do some simple stretching to get my blood moving, loosen up any tension from the night before and just get myself in the attitude of taking on the day.

TIP #2 – Drink water and eat something
This is the thing I struggle with most.  I do try to drink a bottle of water, or a Yeti full of water in my case since that’s what I have by my bed.  I am typically not a breakfast eater.  Brunch on the weekends?  I’m down for that but a breakfast meal during the weekday is typically not my thing.

IMG_4053

I know though that breakfast will help me with my energy levels later, with my metabolism and will just help give me a good start to my day.  You don’t have to prepare a big buffet, just a simple breakfast such as boiled eggs or cereal will get you going on the right foot.

I try to meal prep for the entire week on Sundays.  If you’d like to see a video or blog about that just let me know in the comments.  I have found that it really helps me keep focused with my eating and helps me with my morning routine knowing I have some healthy, convenient meals ready to go.

TIP #1 – Prep the night before
Prepping is so essential for a relaxed morning routine that I just don’t know why everyone isn’t doing it.  I suggest you prep in these three key areas; food, clothes and day.

Food prep will help keep you on track and you’ll already know what you are going to have for breakfast and possibly lunch, which will allow you to move through your morning routine that much faster.

How many times have you gone to your closet and spent time looking for something to wear and then get frustrated because what you wanted to wear is either dirty, at the cleaners or is missing a button?  Were you planning on wearing a sleeveless dress only to see that it was going to rain and you need different attire?  Deciding what you are going to wear the night before will help you have everything ready to go in the morning.  Check your calendar and the weather to help you plan.

What time is that meeting?  If you check your calendar the night before you’ll know what meetings and appointments are coming up and be able to plan for those.  Are you planning on going to the gym after work?  Knowing what’s on your agenda will help you know if you need to pack a change of clothes for that.  Do you have gas in your car?  Do you have an umbrella if it calls for rain?  Prepping will help avoid that last minute rush and help you have a more relaxed morning.

My Bullet Journal Setup for 2018

I’m new to bullet journaling but I’ve watched so many videos, double tapped on so many IG pics and read so many blogs that I feel like I’m practically an expert.  All of that was super inspiring and yet my bullet journal is actually going to be so simple that’s it’s more of a nod to the original idea of bullet journaling than all the cool stuff you see on social media today.

My plan, for at least the beginning of 2018, is to use my bullet journal as more of a social media planning tool and a space to plan videos that I want to film, content ideas for my Instagram and ideas for this blog.

I love looking at all the mood mandalas, habit trackers, weekly layouts and all sorts of doodles but I know that with those bullet journal pages aren’t really going to be realistic for me to implement into my journal.  I really just want to focus on my social media content planning and if I can toss in some cute stuff as I go along then that’s just a bonus.  I will have some pages that include some those things but it won’t be the primary focus of my journal.

If you’d like to try your hand at bullet journaling then you are going to need just a few supplies.

— A good and sturdy journal, preferably one with thicker pages if you are going to doodle.  I am using the Leuchtturm1917 Softcover Medium Dotted Notebook in Anthracite.  I’ve seen others use the Scribbles That Matter (STM) journals as well as the Moleskin Notebook.  I think it’s more important to start journaling instead of worrying about the perfect one.

fullsizeoutput_8513

— Pen(s) and pencil.  I am using the Staedtler Triplus Fineliner .3mm pens and they are working fine.  I know a lot of folks use the Tombow Dual Brush Pens but I tested them in my journal and I noticed a lot of “ghosting” (ink showing through to the other side) and I had already decided I wasn’t going to do much lettering so I just stuck with the Staedtler.  Lots of folks also use pencils to kind of sketch out their designs to see how it will look first.  I’d suggest doing that too unless you like living life on the edge because, well, ink is permanent…haha!

fullsizeoutput_8512

— Rulers and stencils.  If you don’t trust yourself to freehand a straight line then a ruler will come in handy.  I have both a large and small one and I find that the smaller one is better to handle.  You can get them anywhere but mine is just an inexpensive one from Michael’s that is stainless steel and cork on the back.

A great timesaver when creating layouts is to utilize stencils.  I purchased a small stencil from Recollections at Michael’s and found them in the planner area.  They also had some over by the art brushes area such as one with larger circles and squares.  I don’t know if I’ll use them as I’ve decided to keep mine pretty simple but they weren’t that expensive.

I also highly encourage you to check out the Bullet Journal website and watch the intro video to get you started on the right foot: Bullet journal intro video

I’d like to leave y’all with some final tips.  BEFORE you buy anything I highly suggest you do some research, buy a little at a time and use a coupon when you can.  Both Hobby Lobby and Michael’s have a 40% off regular priced merchandise coupon on their app.  Yes, you will have to make a couple of trips and make several purchases but the Tombow Advanced Lettering Kit I purchased is regularly $27 before a coupon so it just makes sense.

Happy journaling y’all and if you are into bullet journaling leave a comment below with a link to your site so I can check it out!

Ham and Cheese Quiche | Recipe

One of our resolutions at the Epps Realty office is to eat-in more and we kicked off that goal today by serving up homemade quiche made by yours truly!  This ham and cheese quiche is super easy to make and can be easily doubled to feed a larger group.

ham and cheese quiche

Here’s what you need:

4 eggs, lightly beaten
1 c milk
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
2 c diced ham
1 c shredded pepper jack cheese
1 c shredded cheddar cheese
1 deep dish frozen pie crust

Here’s how you make it:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk eggs, milk, salt and pepper.
  3. Stir in ham and both cheeses.
  4. Pour pie filling into crust, set on a baking sheet and place in oven for 50-60 minutes or until set.
  5. Serve warm.

The great thing about quiche recipes is that they are so versatile.  You can substitute different cheeses, different meat or meatless, add veggies…the variations are endless!

Let me know if you try this recipe.

Glo Skin Beauty cleanser and lipstick | Review

IMG_8809

I love coming home to find happy mail has arrived from @influenster and @gloskinbeauty. My complimentary products included the Phyto-Active Cream Cleanser and Lipstick in the shade Pillow Talk.

I’ve tried the cleanser for a couple of days now and it leaves my oily skin feeling refreshed, balanced and hydrated without feeling tight after rinsing. The cleansing cream converts to a rich, buildable lather and gently exfoliates with papaya enzymes. I really love how soft my skin feels after using it.

I’ve been looking for the perfect nude pink shade of lipstick and Pillow Talk is it! It’s a creamy, long wear formula that doesn’t feel heavy on the lips and wears well all day. One of my favorite things though is the tube itself. It is magnetic so you don’t have to worry about the lid falling off.

Another wonderful thing about Glo Skin Beauty is they provide the full spectrum of skincare and makeup **AND** they are talc free, paraben free and cruelty free!

The Girls In The Garden

IMG_6906

It’s a rainy Saturday morning…..perfect for curling up with a good book I recently joined a book club with some lovely ladies from my church and TheGirlsInTheGarden by LisaJewell is the first book we are reading!

Here’s a little bit of the synopsis on the back of the book…

“Imagine that you live on a picturesque communal garden square, an oasis in urban London where your children run free, in and out of other people’s houses. Your neighbors have been living there for generations and you trust them implicitly. You think your children are safe. But are they really?”

Oh my goodness, this sounds like it’s going to be good!

What’s on your summer reading list?

Schwarzkopf GLISS Hair Repair

IMG_4114

I tried both the Schwarzkopf GLISS Hair Repair Ultimate Repair Shampoo and Conditioner.  The sample that I received was a generous portion so I was able to wash and condition my hair several times to really be able to test it out.

The shampoo was great.  It did not leave my hair feeling dry or anything.  It lathers up well and rinses easily.  The conditioner felt great too.  I felt like my hair was soft and manageable after I rinsed it.

Both products were great and I just started looking into trying the Schwarzkopf GLISS Kur Ultimate Repair Anti-Damage Hair Mask.  It would be great to do a deep treatment on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Have you ever tried any of these?
